Y offers Try the Y Week and Christmas Family Night

The Champaign Family YMCA is getting an early start on an annual community event, providing Try the Y Week from Saturday, Dec. 3, through Sunday, Dec. 11. Individuals and families who live or work in Champaign County can discover the programs and facilities at the local Y.

The community is also invited to the Y’s annual Christmas Family Night, 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3. This free event will feature performances by the Urbana elementary show choir and hand chime choir; tumbling class instruction and demonstration; games in the gym; open swimming in the Y pool; an indoor snowball fight; and a visit from Santa. There also will be crafts and cookie decorating.

“We love to host the annual Christmas Family Night on the first Saturday in December. We’re also excited to offer our annual community Try the Y week in early December instead of waiting until January,” said YMCA CEO Paul Waldsmith. “This is a great way for families to have fun together playing in the Y’s gym or pool. It’s also an opportunity for adults to increase their physical activity over the holiday season instead of gaining weight through the New Year. Community members are welcome to try group exercise classes, water exercise classes, learn how to use equipment in the fitness center, or walk on the Y’s track. If someone hasn’t been to the Y before they’ll be surprised at the variety and quality of the programs and facilities.”

Y staff will conduct facility tours throughout each day. The YMCA is open 5 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. weekdays; 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays; and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

For additional information, call the YMCA at 937-653-9622 or visit the Y at 191 Community Drive in Urbana.
