Cedar Bog Education Center reopens in Feb.

0

The Cedar Bog Nature Preserve’s Education Center will reopen its doors on Wednesday, Feb. 3. Workshops are lined up for calendar year 2016. Cedar Bog will also be offering certified naturalist certificates as part of its Second Saturday Workshop Series this year.

To highlight, the Great Backyard Bird Count is Feb. 12-15 and Cedar Bog Nature Preserve will be holding activities from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 13 for the Great Backyard Bird Count. Cedar Bog is offering an opportunity for students to participate in citizen science and learn about the birds in our area.

In March, Mark Shieldcastle of the Black Swamp Bird Observatory will discuss the spring migration of birds. Shieldcastle is the Research Director of the Black Swamp Bird Observatory along Lake Erie’s shoreline. An off-the-boardwalk tour will be offered as part of this event, so reserve your seat early for this limited availability workshop. This event will be on Saturday, March 12, and pre-registration is required. The cost is $25 per person or $20 for Ohio History Connection or Cedar Bog Association members.

The Earth Day Art Show and Bike Tour will be held on Saturday, April 30. Local artists will share their creations, and proceeds from their sales benefit the Cedar Bog Association. A Bike Tour kicks off the event and all proceeds from the Bike Tour go toward school transportation costs to take field trips to Cedar Bog. Free naturalist-led tours will be held hourly along with free admission all day long.

If you have never seen Cedar Bog’s Showy Lady Slipper Orchid, you are in for a treat. Our Orchid Walk is scheduled for Saturday, June 4, at 2 p.m. Come see one of the largest populations of Showy Lady Slipper Orchids and mark that off your bucket list!

Jim McCormac will stop by Cedar Bog on Saturday, Sept. 10, to offer a program on “Aster, Goldenrods, Fall Flora & Their Pollinators” as part of the Second Saturday Workshop Series.

To round out the year, don’t forget to bring your entire family to Boo in the Bog, which is slated for Friday and Saturday, Oct. 14 & 15, for a non-scary night walk on the boardwalk.
