The last of three co-defendants involved in an inmate assault at the Tri-County Regional Jail from earlier this year received a prison sentence last week.

Jalen Baxter, 22, received a six-month prison sentence on Nov. 22 during a sentencing hearing. Baxter pleaded guilty to a fourth degree felony aggravated assault charge on Sept. 29.

The charge stems from a July 26 assault of inmate Derek Michael-Tyler Lore.

Prior to last week’s hearing, Baxter was already serving a 36-month prison sentence for a trafficking in heroin charge in Union County. The Champaign County sentence will be served concurrently to the Union County sentence.

Baxter was fined $250 and is subject to post-release control up to three years after his release from prison.

Two other people have been sentenced for their involvement in the assault.

Earlier this month Devonte R. Pigue, 24, received a 22-month prison sentence for aggravated assault and receiving stolen property to be served consecutively to a 24-month sentence after community control was revoked.

In October, Kevin D. Byrd, 24, received a six-month prison sentence for an aggravated assault charge. Byrd received a 36-month prison sentence in Union County for trafficking in heroin on Nov. 22. This sentence will be served concurrently to his Champaign County sentence.
