Triad parents bring up school response to bullying

NORTH LEWISBURG – The parents of a Triad student who allegedly took her own life brought up bullying at Triad Local Schools’ Nov. 21 meeting.

Paul Thompson and Wendy Feucht addressed the school board in public comments, stating the student had been bullied before her death, Triad Superintendent Chris Piper said.

Friends of the family spoke to Piper and the school board at its October meeting, asking for more information on what the school does to combat bullying. At that time, Piper said he could not speak to a specific incident or about a student, citing privacy laws. He reiterated that statement in an email comment Monday.

At the prior board meeting, Piper said the district has a plan in place to address bullying and other issues.

During the meeting, the board approved a number of coaching hires.

The board approved hiring Boys Freshman Basketball Coach Adam Moore at Step 2; Baseball Head Coach Gary Davis at Step 0; Baseball Assistant Coach Harry Alltop at Step 3; Boys 7th Grade Basketball Coach Tracy Butz at Step 1; Boys 8th Grade Basketball Coach Jim Pond at Step 2; Girls 8th Grade Basketball Coach Aaron Keighly at Step 0; and Middle School Track Assistant Coach Kellie McManaway at Step 1; all for the 2016-17 school year.

The board also approved Softball Assistant Coach Erica Trainer at Step 3; Middle School Track Head Coach Tammy Walls at Step 1; and Spring Weightlifting Coach Joe Cardinal at Step 0; all for the 2016-17 school year.

In other action, the board:

•Approved Tammy Walls as an after-school tutor for the 2016-17 school year.

•Approved the 8th grade Washington, D.C. and Gettysburg overnight trip for Oct. 24-27, 2017. Students and parents are responsible for the cost of the trip. A tour bus will be used for transportation.
