M’burg board OKs teacher evaluation contract changes

MECHANICSBURG – Mechanicsburg Exempted Village Schools board approved two additions to the teachers’ union contracts related to teacher evaluations.

The board approved Memorandums of Understanding about value-added data being used in teacher evaluations, and shared teacher evaluations, at its Dec. 17 meeting.

Superintendent Danielle Prohaska said the value-added data MOU was needed to match changes in state law approved during the summer. This MOU allows for the use of value-added data, but teachers are held harmless from that data at this time.

The second MOU is for teachers who teach classes under different principals in the district. Prior evaluations only allowed for one principal’s input.

“Before, we assigned a teacher to one principal or another,” she said. “But now we have so many shared teachers, we felt it would be good feedback for teachers to have that from the multiple principals they work with.”

In other action, the board:

•Accepted $2,265 in donations from American Legion Post 238, Mechanicsburg, for the eighth grade Washington, D.C. trip.

•Approved overnight trips for the high school wrestling team to participate in various matches.

•Approved extended medical leave to Jan. 18, 2016, for Deborah Nelson.

•Approved Katy Barry as eighth grade girls basketball head coach.
