PLUMWOOD, Madison County – Enoch Eichorn isn’t the kind of man to ask for help.

The farmer, who lives and works on Woods and West Avenue in Plumwood, “loves doing the harvesting.”

But when he lost a sister in a tragic car accident earlier this month, Eichorn fell behind. That’s when friends and fellow members of his church, the Canaan Amish Mennonite Church, stepped in to help.

The Plumwood farm had six combines on the property by 9 a.m. on Oct. 19, a contrast to most harvests when it’s just Eichorn and his single combine.

By 1 p.m., only 20 acres of the 202 acres that had needed harvested remained and volunteers showed no signs of slowing down.

It’s the quickest the corn has ever been harvested and shelled, according to Eichorn.

“If it were just me, it would have taken a lot longer,” he said.

The volunteers made it possible for Eichorn to mourn his lost sister and spend time with some of his other siblings who came to town for the funeral.

John Helmuth, one of the farmers who helped and a member of Eichorn’s church, estimated between 15 and 20 people total lent a hand on Wednesday.

“That’s what we are on Earth for… to help each other. The Bible teaches to help your neighbor,” Helmuth said.
