A sentencing hearing for a man who pleaded no contest to charges in an assault case was continued until next week.

A sentencing hearing in the case of Kevin L. Connolly was held Tuesday before it was continued to Dec. 10. During Tuesday’s proceedings, Champaign County Prosecutor Kevin Talebi informed the court that his office was reviewing information the victim brought with him for restitution purposes.

The court was told the estimated total amount of restitution claimed as of Tuesday was $86,416.

Connolly’s attorney, Christopher R. Bucio, stated that while he and Talebi previously had discussion regarding restitution, he did not expect a restitution request at that level. Bucio requested a restitution hearing prior to sentencing and the court scheduled to hold one prior to sentencing.

Connolly, 39, of Cable, pleaded no contest to a third degree felony tampering with evidence charge and a misdemeanor assault charge on Oct. 26.

The charges stem from an Aug. 5 incident where Connolly reportedly struck a person in the back of the head with a metal pipe causing the victim to sustain head injuries. The victim was transported by MedFlight to Grant Hospital in Columbus and sustained a broken ankle.

The case was headed to trial in early November before the plea of no contest was entered. Four other charges, including three second degree felony felonious assault charges, were dismissed once the plea was entered.
