Turning potatoes into dollars

MECHANICSBURG – For the third football season, the Mechanicsburg Future Farmers of America chapter is making big money on grilled potatoes.

Advisor Kevin Neer estimates the FFA has grilled more than 2,500 potatoes during that time period, operating a concession stand on the visitors’ side at football games and also selling the potatoes at community events. “They have become quite the popular item,” Neer said. “Fans from the opposing team have been very responsive and it is simply amazing how many Burg fans walk over to get a grilled potato. When the opposing fans see all of our fans getting them they know they must be good!”

Proceeds from the potatoes have helped erase a significant deficit faced by the FFA when Neer took over. The FFA also donates to several charities on the national, state and local level.

There are at least two future events coming up where the potatoes will be available. This coming Friday night at the Oct. 21 football game will be the next concession, followed by “Boo in the U” on Beggars Night in Mechanicsburg on October 31. The FFA is also rooting for the Indians to host a football playoff game.

Potatoes are $5 with available toppings of cheese, chili, veggies, sour cream, butter, bacon bits and jalapenos. On special occasions, the FFA offers pulled pork also.
