Occupants in three-vehicle crash remain hospitalized

Three people involved in a three-vehicle crash over the weekend remained hospitalized as of Tuesday.

According to Champaign County Sheriff Matt Melvin, Christopher Borders was listed in critical condition, Curtis Stigall was listed in fair condition and Kelsey Thomas was listed as stable.

The crash occurred in the 6000 block of East U.S. Route 36.

An initial investigation by the sheriff’s office revealed Stigall, 29, of Urbana, was operating a 2007 Hyundai eastbound in the 6000 block of East U.S. Route 36 when he traveled left of center and hit a 1997 Honda driven by Thomas, 27, of Urbana. Thomas’ vehicle was then rear-ended by a 2008 Mazda driven by Shane Herbert, 18, of Sidney.

Stigall was flown to Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton, via CareFlight, while Thomas was flown to Grant Hospital in Columbus. A passenger in Thomas’ vehicle, Borders, 27, of Urbana, was also flown to Miami Valley Hospital.

Three children riding in Thomas’ vehicle were transported to hospitals as a result of the crash. No update on the status of the children was available.

The crash is under investigation by the sheriff’s office.
