Alcohol is suspected as a contributing factor in a three-vehicle crash on Saturday night that sent several people to area hospitals.

According to the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, an initial investigation reveals Curtis Stigall, age 29 of Urbana, was operating a 2007 Hyundai eastbound in the 6000 block of East U.S. Route 36 when he traveled left of center striking a 1997 Honda driven by Kelsey Thomas, age 27 of Urbana. Thomas was then rear-ended by a 2008 Mazda driven by Shane Herbert, age 18 of Sidney.

Stigall was flown to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton by CareFlight. Thomas was flown to Grant Hospital in Columbus. A passenger in the Thomas vehicle named Christopher Borders, age 27 of Urbana, was flown to Miami Valley Hospital. Three children riding in the Thomas vehicle were transported to hospitals: a 4-year-old female passenger was flown to Children’s Medical Center, a 9-year-old male was transported to Mercy Memorial Hospital and a 3-month-old was also transported to MMH.

Stigall is believed to have been driving under the influence, according to the sheriff’s office.

Air bags deployed on both the Honda and Hyundai.

Damaged vehicles are pictured after a crash late Saturday evening in the 6000 block of U.S. Route 36.
