MECHANICSBURG – Mechanicsburg’s Dohron Wilson Elementary students recognized veterans from their community with songs, poems and patriotic gifts at a Wednesday assembly.

The school district also invited veterans to dine with students that day for lunch.

The elementary’s Student Council hosted the fifth annual program with poems, songs and gifts. Student Council members led the Pledge of Allegiance, and fifth-graders sang the “Star-Spangled Banner” to kick off the assembly. Each grade level presented either a song, a history lesson or a poem or story at the event. Students presented veterans with handmade poppies and U.S. flags.

“We are all truly honored to have you in our building today,” Acting Elementary Principal Scott Howell told the attendees.

Mechanicsburg Mayor Greg Kimball read a proclamation from village council recognizing veterans.

American Legion Donald Cannon Post 238 served as Color Guard. The Student Council gave each veteran a certificate of thanks for their service.

Band Director Brad Oyer wrapped up the festivities with a rendition of “Taps.”
