Mechanicsburg war hero to be recognized Saturday

MECHANICSBURG – A Mechanicsburg native killed in action in Vietnam will be honored at an event Saturday.

Robert T. Reed was the only Mechanicsburg area resident killed during the Vietnam War. He was a 1964 graduate of Mechanicsburg High School and was drafted into the U.S. Army on Nov. 17, 1965. He was killed in action on Nov. 14, 1966.

Reed received the Bronze Star Medal posthumously and was a Purple Heart recipient, according to information provided by American Legion Donald Cannon Post #238 Historian Jim Blanton.

The American Legion Donald Cannon Post #238 will hold a ceremony at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27 at Maple Grove Cemetery in Mechanicsburg honoring Reed. A new bronze plaque was donated by the Champaign County Veteran Service Commission and attached to the front of the monument. On the back of the monument it reads, “Robert T. Reed, All gave some, Bobby gave all.”
