WL-S board begins process of renewing levy

WEST LIBERTY – West Liberty-Salem Local Schools began the process of placing a renewal levy on the March ballot.

On Oct. 20, the school board approved seeking certification for a 1 percent, three-year renewal income tax on the March 15 primary special election ballot. The levy brings in an estimated $1.3 million to the district annually. The board will need to pass a second resolution before it will be placed on the ballot.

In other action, the board:

•Approved the completion of District Transportation Safety Drills as required by the state. Drills were completed on Sept. 28, 29, 30 and Oct. 1.

•Approved Anthony Creamer of Bellefontaine to be contracted for snow removal and salt application for the 2015-16 winter season.

•Approved Shelby Dill as a full-time bus driver at three hours per day, on an existing route upon completing of licensure requirements for the rest of the 2015-16 school year. Dill will also be added to the substitute bus driver and substitute aide list for the rest of the 2015-16 school year.

•Accepted the resignation of Junior Class Concession Advisor Jennifer Peterson for the 2015-16 school year.

•Approved staff members to serve on the SLO Committee for the 2015-16 school year. Each staff member will receive a $500 stipend for their active participation.

•Approved Varsity Boys Baseball Coach John Payer at Step 0, High School Boys Track Assistant Coach Mike Louden at Step 1, and High School Girls Head Track Coach Ann Vogel at Step 3, all for the 2015-16 season.

•Approved Rebekah Troyer’s unpaid leave of absence for approximately six weeks, following her use of six weeks of maternity leave. Her expected return date is Feb. 12, 2016.

•Approved volunteer Track Coaches Larry Steider and Beth Lamb, and volunteer Cheerleading Coach Kim Long, for the 2015-16 school year.

•Approved Assistant High School Girls Track Coach Mandy Lauck at Step 2, Assistant High School Girls Softball Coach Tracy Flora at Step 3, and Head Middle School Boys Track coach Aaron Lauck at Step 3, for the 2015-16 season.

•Approved Head Varsity Softball Coach Kenleigh Farris at Step 1, JV High School Softball Coach Serena Neer at Step 1, Head Middle School Girls Track Coach Becky Moell at Step 3, Spring Weight Room Supervisor Dan McGill at Step 3, Freshman Boys Basketball Coach Dan Miller at Step 1, and High School Boys Track Coach Joe Taylor at Step 2, all for the 2015-16 season.

•Approved volunteer Secretary Judy Legge for the 2015-16 school year.

•Approved mentors for the Resident Educator Licensure Program for the 2015-16 school year, which includes six trained mentors working with 13 Resident Educators. Resident Educators are paid a range of $250 to $500 per candidate mentored, depending on their years of experience.

•Approved advancing Kenleigh Farris to the Bachelors +150 column on the negotiated pay scale, retroactive to the beginning of the 2015-16 school year.

•Approved Assistant Marching Band Director Brice Henry at Step 0 Level 4 for the 2015-16 school year.

•Approved donations of $150 from Jim and Jill Hoffman for Girls Soccer, $100 from Jim and Jill Hoffman for Boys Soccer, and $75 from the West Liberty-Salem class of 1975 for miscellaneous uses.

•Approved the School Facilities Commission Security Grant of $4,000 to be used toward reimbursement for the Lynx Server the district purchased for $20,000 from the Permanent Improvement New Equipment account.

•Approved using the Madison-Champaign Educational Service Center Nurse Sub List for the 2015-16 school year.

•Approved using Steve Kizer Auctioneer, located at Lippincott Station, to store and auction all school renovation items as required.

•Approved the purchase of a new playground equipment package from GameTime using Elementary 018-9110 funds in the amount of $15,000 and Permanent Improvement Equipment funds in the amount of $20,351 for a total amount of $35,350.87. The $20,351 amount will be paid back from the 018-9110 fund over the next two fiscal years if funds are available.
