WEST LIBERTY – West Liberty-Salem Local Schools students won’t have to pay a student transportation fee for the upcoming school year.

The school board approved ceasing the collection of the $50 Student Transportation Fee for all student activities for the 2016-17 school year at its Tuesday meeting. The fee brings in an estimated $24,600 per year, Treasurer Steve Godwin said. School administrators said the current financial forecast warranted a break in collecting the fee for a year.

The fee has been in existence since 2012, Godwin said.

The school board also approved purchasing eight R.E.M. Communications Inc. camera systems to replace six systems that are no longer operating or supported and two systems for new buses. The estimated cost is $17,191.

In other action, the board:

•Approved hiring Assistant Varsity Golf Coach Ryan Meister at Step 0 and Freshman Volleyball Coach Courtney Smith at Step 0 for the 2016-17 sports season.

•Approved hiring part-time Paraprofessional Amy Steider for a one-year contract at Step 5.

•Approved hiring part-time Paraprofessional Shelby Dill for a one-year contract at Step 0.

•Approved moving Angela Sanborn to a full-time paraprofessional at her current pay step.

•Approved substitute teacher pay rate at $100 per day (an increase of $8 per day) for the first 26 days of service. Upon completion of the 26th day, the substitute rate changes to $110 per day (an increase of $3) for the 2016-17 school year.

•Approved the yearly tuition rate as set by the state at $4,815.42 and out-of-state at $10,383.44, for the 2016-17 school year.

•Approved purchase orders for ISP Fee Internet Service ($21,324) and ISP VOIP Fee for Phone ($10,128).
