On Wednesday, at 2:17 p.m., Champaign Countywide Communication Center received a 911 call in reference to a two-vehicle wreck with possible injuries at 2986 W. state Route 29.

Urbana Fire & EMS and West Liberty Fire & EMS along with Champaign County sheriff deputies responded to the location.

A red 2015 Ford Heavy Duty Truck had been traveling westbound on West state Route 29 within a construction zone operated by the Ohio Department of Transportation.

At the time roadway shoulder work was being conducted and the ODOT flagger had the 2015 red Ford Truck stopped. A 2005 gold Ford Focus driven by Ryan Brewer, 26, of Urbana failed to observe that the truck was stopped. Brewer’s vehicle struck the left rear of the truck and crossed into the eastbound lane of travel. Brewer’s vehicle sustained heavy damage.

Brewer and his female passenger along with a 7-month-old child were wearing seat belts and were uninjured. The driver of the truck, owned by Eagle Bridge Construction of Sidney, and his passenger were uninjured.

Deputies cited Brewer for failing to maintain assured clear distance.

“As sheriff of Champaign County, Ohio, I urge the citizens of our community to be attentive while driving in posted construction zone areas,” Sheriff Matthew R. Melvin stated. “This upcoming week, traffic will also increase with our area children going back to school, and those buses will be out on our roadways.

“Our area roadway workers in those construction areas face difficult conditions each day while they work to improve our roads and make them safer,” Melvin said. “These work zones aren’t there to personally inconvenience you. These men and women working in the construction zone area are making our roadways much safer for your commute. Let them work. Let them live.”
