County’s jobless rate increases in June

Champaign County’s jobless rate increased to 4.4 percent in June, according to information released Tuesday by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

In May, the county’s unemployment rate was 3.9 percent with 19,400 employed people and 800 unemployed people. The number of employed people dropped to 19,200 in June, while the number of unemployed people increased to 900.

Champaign County’s jobless rate in June 2015 was also 4.4 percent with the same number of unemployed people and 19,400 employed people.

Champaign County was one of 26 counties across the state with an unemployment rate of 4.4 percent or lower.

Logan County’s unemployment rate was 4.1 percent, up from 3.9 percent in May.

Mercer County had the lowest jobless rate in the state at 3.2 percent, while Monroe County had the highest at 10.2 percent.

Ohio’s unemployment rate was 5.0 percent in June, down from 5.1 percent in May. Ohio’s nonagricultural wage and salary employment increased 12,400 over the month, from a revised 5,484,600 in May to 5,497,000 in June.

The number of workers unemployed in Ohio in June was 291,000, down 9,000 from 300,000 in May. The number of unemployed has increased by 17,000 in the past 12 months from 274,000.

The June unemployment rate for Ohio was 0.2 percentage points higher than the June 2015 rate of 4.8 percent.

The U.S. unemployment rate for June was 4.9 percent, up from 4.7 percent in May and down from 5.3 percent in June 2015.
