The Champaign County Retired Teachers Association met recently at the Church of the Nazarene in Urbana. The 2016 Scholarship winner, Lauren Mayberry, was introduced.

She will attend Duquesne University in the fall and plans a major in secondary education. She achieved many honors scholastically and as an athlete at Mechanicsburg High School.

When the formal meeting opened the group said the Pledge of Allegiance as it was written in 1892. Several reports were given, and the speaker for the day was presented.

Chuck Spinner, a member of CCRTA, acquainted the retired teachers with a train tragedy that happened in the community of Naperville, Illinois, in 1946.

He grew up in there and wrote a book about the wreck. He also displayed another book he has written.

Members were reminded of the Home and Garden Tour to be held June 25 and 26 in Urbana. The speaker at a previous meeting, Suzanne McCoy of the Champaign County Preservation Alliance, had previewed the event for those in attendance.

Speaker Chuck Spinner shows memorabilia of the Naperville train wreck and holds his two books – To the Heavens from the Stars, and The Tragedy at the Loomis Street Crossing.
