WAYNE TWP. – Local first-responders, the county coroner and law enforcement were called to an incident involving a man who was crushed by a vehicle that fell on him at approximately 12:05 p.m. on Tuesday.

According to Champaign County Sheriff Matt Melvin, Jeff O’Brien, 49, of rural Cable, was repairing a vehicle when it fell from jack stands.

According to Champaign County Coroner Dr. Joshua Richards, O’Brien had taken the day off from work to replace parts in the rear differential of a Jeep. He was under the vehicle when it fell off of the jack stands he was using, trapping him under the vehicle.

He died as a result of asphyxiation/crushing injuries to his chest. Richards stated no autopsy was requested as the cause of death was evident.

The man’s wife heard the vehicle fall and called 911 dispatch. She attempted to jack the vehicle up to get it off of him.

The incident occurred at 3397 Kennard-Kingscreek Road, northeast of Urbana. The investigation is ongoing by the sheriff’s office.
