Urbana police had sought the community’s assistance in helping them in solving multiple overnight crimes that occurred on June 17 that had resulted in heavy damage and a high value loss of property to multiple victims.

So far, and in addition to Taylor Maintenance victims at 518 Miami Street, other victims include: All-Phase Electric at 600 Miami Street, and The Coffee Depot at 644 Miami Street, which police are investigating as a breaking and entering, with criminal damaging and theft from the Railcar museum at that location.

Acting on information, provided by the public, police located 18-year-old Adrian D. Recker, in the 700 block of Miami Street Saturday at 7:14 p.m., and took him into custody on a bench warrant for failure to appear in court and brought him to the police division for questioning. During Recker’s interview, police were able to determine that he, as well as two other 18-year-old men, a 16-year-old male juvenile, and a 14-year-old male juvenile were responsible for the crimes that occurred overnight on June 17.

As of Sunday evening, police have interviewed everyone suspected of being involved, except for one of the 18-year-old men. His family is aware that we are seeking him to speak with him.

After his interview at the police division, Recker was taken to the Tri-County Jail on the bench warrant and will make his initial appearance in Champaign Municipal Court on Monday morning.

None of the adults or juveniles have been formally charged with the crimes from June 17, as police continue to sort out the evidence, await final cost estimates on the dollar loss, and, locate and interview the final person suspected to be involved.

“I’d like to thank the many officers who worked on this investigation, from identifying and collecting crime scene evidence, locating and interviewing Recker, and then working to locate and interview the others responsible for these crimes,” said Urbana Police Chief Matt Lingrell.

Soon, police will be seeking multiple criminal charges against various members of this group for their respective parts in these crimes, including: trespassing vandalism (multiple counts), breaking and entering, theft and theft of motor vehicles.

Police are withholding the names of the other four responsible in these crimes until the final person involved has been interviewed and/or formal criminal charges have been filed against them.

Urbana police are very appreciative of the tips that came to them from the public concerning these crimes. It certainly helped us to speed along the process and helped us to have success in this investigation. Identifying and being able to bring criminal charges against those involved also helps fellow citizens and business owners who were victims to have some stress relief, knowing that those responsible have been identified and will be facing criminal charges as a result of their actions,” said Lingrell.
