A man charged with multiple firearm charges from a March traffic stop is scheduled to appear in court today for an arraignment hearing.

Jose R.R. Nunez, 19, of 3126 Medina Ave., Columbus, was indicted this month on two counts each of carrying a concealed weapon with a specification for forfeiture of a weapon and improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle with a specification for forfeiture of a weapon and one count each of failure to comply with underage alcohol laws, criminal trespass and illegal use or possession of marijuana paraphernalia.

On March 26, the Urbana Police Division was dispatched on a report of trespassers acting suspicious near an abandoned residence on Boyce Street. Police learned that subjects had gotten into a gray 2003 Chevrolet pickup truck and left the area as police were en route to investigate.

An officer observed the vehicle in the downtown area and conducted a stop of the vehicle in front of the post office. Another officer arrived as backup and police recovered drugs, alcohol and weapons from the vehicle.

Police learned Nunez was the owner of the vehicle and had been drinking alcohol. The two firearms recovered were a .45 caliber Glock handgun with a 10-round magazine as well as a .9mm caliber Ruger handgun with a 12-round magazine.

Another occupant in the vehicle, Sergio Salgado, 20, was charged with misdemeanors of criminal trespassing, underage consumption and possession of drug paraphernalia. According to the Champaign County Municipal Court’s website, Salgado was fined $200 and $250 for the underage consumption and criminal trespassing charges respectively on April 14 while the drug charge was dismissed.

The website notes a contempt warrant was issued against Salgado on June 9.

Police also found two juveniles in the vehicle who had been drinking alcohol. The juveniles were charged into juvenile court with underage consumption of alcohol and criminal trespassing.
