Mechanicsburg Police Department down one cruiser

MECHANICSBURG – Village Council on Wednesday received an update concerning the status of one of the police department’s cruisers damaged recently by fire.

Police Chief John Alexander informed council that the 2009 Chevrolet Impala has been out of service since catching fire a few weeks ago while Capt. Scott Bodey was on a call.

According to Alexander, Bodey was going to get a statement form from the cruiser, but when he opened the door, the vehicle caught fire. No one was injured.

“We are working with the insurance company trying to see whether they are going to fix it or total it out,” Alexander said. “They sent a special fire investigator out from the insurance company, and he is looking into everything to see what caused it.”

With the Impala out of commission, the department is operating with one cruiser, a 2015 Ford Explorer, Alexander said.

In other police matters, new officers Shawn Farmer and Daniel Dixon were sworn in on Wednesday.

“We are getting good guys, but we are losing them (to other jobs) as fast as we are getting them,” Alexander said.
