A Champaign County juvenile was charged with two counts of attempted abduction following an alleged abduction attempt on the Simon Kenton Trail Tuesday.

According to a Champaign County Sheriff’s Office report, a 911 call was received by the Champaign Countywide Communication Center from a female around 8:30 a.m. in reference to an attempted abduction that had just occurred on the bike path.

Upon law enforcement’s arrival, the victim was crying uncontrollably. She advised she had been jogging south along the multi-use trail from the state Route 55 parking area.

As she approached the bike path bridge, she said, she observed a male on a bench on the northeast side of the bridge. She said she stopped before crossing the bridge at the bench to fix her hair into a ponytail.

She said she felt something was not right, started jogging northward, then noticed the man running toward her.

She said she kept running and noticed the male had slowed and was almost walking. She said she slowed her pace before he ran toward her and grabbed her around the upper portion of her chest area.

The victim said the male forced her off the west side of the path into the weeds and grass area where she screamed and tried to push him. The male then backed away from the victim and told her he was just joking.

The victim was able to get away from the male suspect and ran to the area of the parking lot where she called 911.

The male suspect was apprehended by Champaign County Chief Deputy Rick Jordan and Urbana Police Sgt. Ed Burkhammer.

The suspect, identified as a 15-year-old, admitted grabbing the victim and said he was trying to scare her. The juvenile was placed in the juvenile detention center.
