Triad board approves no-drone policy

NORTH LEWISBURG – Triad Local Schools on Thursday approved a no-drone policy for its athletic events.

The policy, spurred by the development of a similar policy in the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA), prohibits the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (more commonly known as drones) at district practices, scrimmages, previews and activities under the auspices of the OHSAA. District officials may deny admission or entry to anyone attempting to use a drone until the event is completed, and exceptions to the policy must be approved in advance by the superintendent.

Superintendent Chris Piper said the policy was recently approved by the OHSAA, and the school district’s policy mirrors the OHSAA’s. The policy did not stem from any kind of litigation, but the OHSAA decided to approve a policy in light of issues starting to crop up with people using drones.

“They gave us this language to avoid having drones flying over football games, as an example,” he said.

The school board also discussed district-wide goals relating to district culture, continuous improvement, financial stability and academic achievement. Piper told the board the goals would be measured against the 42 districts in areas surrounding Triad and would be moved up as the district meets those goals.

In other action, the board:

•Accepted Title I teacher Christen Smith’s resignation, effective July 23, 2015.
