UU holds 125th commencement ceremony

Urbana University held its 125th commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 7, in the Warren G. Grimes Center gymnasium. More than 150 students received diplomas. The ceremony began with an invocation by board of trustees member and UU chaplain Rev. Betsy Coffman, a welcome from President Dr. George Lucas Jr. and greetings from the board of trustees by Gary James.

Ryan Scott of Piqua delivered the student address. Scott received a B.S. in Adolescent Education and a B.A. in History.

Lucas introduced the commencement speaker, state Rep. Nino Vitale (R-Urbana) of the 85th House District.

Dr. Karen Basinger presented The Gold Medal Award to Taylor Cayot of Bellefontaine. Cayot earned a B.S. in Psychology and a B.S. in Criminal Justice, Summa Cum Laude.

The Royal Blues Concert Band and members of the University Singers performed several pieces, including “The Star Spangled Banner” and Urbana University’s Alma Mater. Following the conferring of the degrees, the Alumni Welcome by Ben Mitchell, B.S. Science ’79 and MBA ’15, and the cheers from family and friends, the administration, board of trustees, and faculty led the recessional with the graduates to an outdoor reception.
