A play about mathematics and mental illness that won the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Best Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play will be performed at the Perennial Theatre in April.

“Proof” will be performed April 1-3 by the Perennial Theatre Company in the group’s theater at 240-242 Patrick Ave. The story is about Catherine, trying to prove she’s a math genius like her father. She is a the center of a triangle with people pulling her three ways. Catherine cared for her father, who battled mental illness, and she fears she inherited his illness.

“It’s an important play,” said Jim Arter, director of the show. “It’s a drama, but has lots of humor within it. The mystery unfolds in the eyes of the audience, and you realize the depth of Catherine.”

The play was adapted into a 2005 film starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Anthony Hopkins and Jake Gyllenhaal. The Perennial Theatre’s production features all local talent – Urbana University Associate Professor Tom Smith, Urbana University graduate Mercedes Dagnan, Urbana University student Kohl King and Urbana resident Katie Porter. Dagnan and King are co-owners of the theater.

The Perennial Theatre Company is a non-profit established in March 2015. The theater is a “black box” theater, a moderately-sized space for performance with movable stage, seating and lighting. It provides a more intimate theater experience, the Urbana Daily Citizen reported previously.

“Proof” will be performed at 8 p.m. April 1 and 2; and 3 p.m. April 3. Tickets are $15 for adults; $10 for seniors, veterans, faculty and students. To purchase tickets, call King at 937-896-1511.
