Hogs killed in Ridge Road fire

Only some of the 13 hogs housed in a barn at 4880 Ridge Road, midway between Urbana and West Liberty, escaped a fire that started in a small barn and traveled to a larger barn, possibly due to high winds, on Wednesday morning. Five of the hogs that died were show hogs. The structures were severely damaged. The property is owned by Mona and Paul Kite.

Mona Kite called the Champaign County 911 Communications Center at 10:13 a.m. to report that a small barn was on fire, then called to report the fire had traveled to a larger barn on the property, according to the Communications Center. West Liberty firefighters were assisted by firefighters from Urbana, Rosewood and St. Paris. The fire was deemed contained at 12:15 p.m.

While firefighters were dealing with the barn fires, the Communications Center received another fire report. Firefighters from St. Paris, Christiansburg and Fletcher fought a 15-acre blaze in a field of corn stubble in the 1300 block of North Elm Tree Road, just north of U.S. Route 36, on the west side of the county. The fire was reported at 10:52 a.m. and considered contained at 12:11 p.m.
