Dogs for reading

MECHANICSBURG – The number 13 may be considered unlucky by some, but not at the Mechanicsburg Public Library. For 13 years the library has provided a fun way to practice reading. Read aloud to a trained canine or feline companion at the library for two Saturdays in April.

The listening animals are certified pet therapy animals owned, trained and handled by volunteer members from DOGTORS Animal-Assisted Therapy Teams. Children find that reading can be fun, and by practicing with their “listening animal” they have improved their reading scores in school. It’s free, it’s all volunteer and, best of all, it works.

The library will furnish books and e-readers (or bring your favorite books) and an attentive “listener” with a trained volunteer handler. There will be a comfy dog house to read in and the opportunity for 20 minutes of relaxed reading. PAWS Reading Saturdays are April 9 and 23, with time slots at 9:30, 10 and 10:30 a.m. Choose the best reading time slot for you, but registration is required to reserve that time. The schedule fills up quickly, but there also will be a waiting list. Registration begins March 28 at the library.

This pooch loves a good story. Mason Nunamaker read the obviously thrilling tale at a previous reading session.
