LOGAN COUNTY – Seventy people and two dogs were “Freezin’ for a Reason” at Old Field Beach Saturday, March 18, when they raced into Indian Lake to raise money for Special Olympics, Ohio. Sponsored locally for seven years by Moose Lodge 1533, this year’s Indian Lake Polar Plunge raised more than $17,000 from pledges for athletic training programs for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

Paige Ludwig, organizer of the local plunge, said people from Columbus to Lima participated this year. Prior to the plunge, swimmers wearing costumes were judged by audience approval. The eight-member Snow Bunnies and Frosty Bear Balls won and were the first to race into the water. They were greeted by four members of the Indian Lake Joint Fire District standing several yards from shore in water-proof gear. An EMS team stood on shore to make sure swimmers returned safely to shore in the 41 degree air.

Similar events throughout Ohio are sponsored by the Ohio State Moose Association and the Ohio Law Enforcement Torch Run for the Special Olympics.
