Officers and investigators from the Urbana Police Division performed multiple raids in the same housing complex over the weekend. The raids discovered drugs, drug paraphernalia and cash.

At 10:49 p.m. Friday, multiple officers conducted tactical raids of three apartments, all located within the same building, 631, 633 and 639 Hagenbuch St., as part of ongoing covert drug investigations within the city of Urbana. Police were assisted in the raids by five officers from the Adult Parole Authority (APA) from Champaign and Logan Counties.

As APA officers made contact with the resident living in 631 Hagenbuch St., two teams of Urbana officers, acting with court-ordered search warrants, simultaneously raided 633 and 639 Hagenbuch St.

These raids were led by Sgt. Jason Kizer, who coordinated many weeks of covert drug investigations involving several Urbana police officers. Police recovered illegal drug crimes evidence from the three locations including a large amount of packaged methamphetamine, prescription pills, marijuana, some unknown and suspected illegal drug substances, two bundles of cash and many items of drug paraphernalia.

While two men were held in custody at the Tri-County Regional Jail, police expect to present additional criminal cases against these two men and other individuals connected to this investigation to an upcoming grand jury.

In custody are:

-Bubba Lee Hatfield, age 33, of 631 Hagenbuch St. Hatfield is currently being detained on a holder from the Adult Parole Authority.

-James Andrew Johnson III, age 38, of 633 Hagenbuch St. – is currently being held on Felony 2 Trafficking in Drugs, and Felony 3 Possession of Drugs.

“I’m extremely proud of how well many of our newer officers helped us in carrying out these raids safely for everyone involved,” said Urbana Police Chief Matt Lingrell. “During the raids there was a 13-year-old child inside of 639 Hagenbuch St., and a one-week old infant inside 633 Hagenbuch St. (parents are: James Andrew Johnson III and Emily Belcher).

“I also appreciate the cooperation and tips we’ve received from citizens who have helped us to have some success in responding to felony crimes throughout the community,” Lingrell added. “People with information are encouraged to notify us at 937-652-4350, or, at our Crime/Drug Tip line of 937-652-4357.”
