2nd kayaker’s body recovered on central Ohio river

MARION, Ohio (AP) — Searchers have found the second body of a kayaker in a central Ohio river.

Authorities recovered the body of 28-year-old Raymond Williams in the Scioto River on Wednesday.

He and 29-year-old Tyler Webb were kayaking near Marion on Monday. Webb’s body was spotted by a fisherman and recovered by rescue teams Monday.

Marion County Sheriff Tim Bailey says it appears they got into trouble almost immediately after launching their kayaks near a lowhead dam.

He says the dams create a deceptively dangerous hydraulic pull that easily trap experienced swimmers.

The sheriff says Webb was wearing a life jacket when he drowned.

Both of the men were from Marion.

Officer hospitalized after touching illegal substance

CINCINNATI (AP) — An Ohio police officer is recovering after touching what authorities say is a suspected drug during a narcotics-related traffic stop.

Officials say the Cincinnati police officer felt light headed after touching the substance on Tuesday.

The officer was treated at a hospital. Police will test the substance to determine what it is.

A police officer in eastern Ohio accidentally overdosed last week when he touched the powerful opioid fentanyl on his shirt during a drug arrest.

A Cincinnati police union official says potent street drugs are more dangerous for both addicts and the first responders.

Northeast Ohio police officers involved in fatal shooting

CANTON, Ohio (AP) — Police in the northeast Ohio city of Canton say two officers have fatally shot a suspect.

The (Canton) Repository reports that the Canton police chief said the suspect was killed shortly before 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Police haven’t released the name of the suspect or officers and details about the shooting.

The two officers have been placed on paid administrative leave.

Canton is 60 miles south of Cleveland.

College announces layoffs, pay cuts to handle debt

WILBERFORCE, Ohio (AP) — One of the country’s oldest historically black private colleges is laying off workers and imposing steep pay cuts in an ongoing struggle to survive.

Wilberforce University cut $750,000 from its payroll last year, but the president of the small Ohio school says that’s not enough to deal with large debts that threaten the college’s existence. The school is preparing for a visit from its accrediting body, which will review issues including debt management.

The Dayton Daily News reports that university president Herman Felton told alumni last week that staffers will see at least 20 percent pay cuts, though he promised his own salary would be reduced by even more.

Declining attendance had threatened to close the school in 2014, but enrollment in November 2015 rose 85 percent to 650 students.

Ohio court disbars attorney for impersonating colleague

CINCINNATI (AP) — The Ohio Supreme Court is disbarring an attorney who was disciplined for impersonating a former colleague and practicing after his law license was suspended.

The court voted 6-0 to disbar Robert Hoskins, with one justice not participating. The court says Hoskins has a pattern of “deliberately and repeatedly violating” court orders.

Documents filed by the court’s Board of Professional Conduct show Hoskins faced a 60-day suspension in April 2015, but he continued to practice. In one case, Hoskins used an email address with the name of his former colleague.

Documents show Hoskins tried to send a letter from a psychologist to the board. The Board rejected the letter, calling it “insufficient.”

Hoskins told The Cincinnati Enquirer he resigned weeks ago but declined to comment further.
