To draw attention to the problem of child abuse and the community’s role in preventing it, several local organizations joined the Champaign County Department of Job and Family Services (CCDJFS) in Wear Blue Day, April 12.

Wear Blue is an annual statewide awareness campaign in which citizens are encouraged to wear blue on the second Wednesday of April, Child Abuse Prevention Month.

“We thank everyone for their participation and show of support for our community’s shared role in preventing child abuse and making Champaign County a safe place for children,” Amber Spence, child protective services supervisor of CCDJFS, said.

Employees of the following local organizations participated in Wear Blue Day:

Caring Kitchen, Center for Creative Child Care, Champaign County Auditor’s Office, Champaign County Board of Developmental Disabilities, Champaign County Bureau of Motor Vehicles/Title/Legal, Champaign County Department of Job and Family Services, Champaign County Library, Champaign County Recorder’s Office, Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, Champaign Family YMCA, Champaign Transit System, Bridges Community Action, Champaign Residential Services, Inc., Martin, Browne, Hull & Harper, Mechanicsburg Exempted Village Schools, Project Woman and WellSpring.

Spence said that throughout the year, community members can take an active role in protecting children by reporting suspected child abuse or neglect to CCDJFS at 937-484-1500, or by calling 911 when a child is in immediate danger.
