Meet Sammie, a little, senior Miniature Pinscher, who is looking for a loving lap. She is a happy, little girl who weighs 12 pounds and loves nothing more than to snuggle. Sammie gets along with other dogs, cats and children. We received Sammie because her owner had passed away. We estimate Sammie to be 8-10 years old, which qualifies her for our Senior 4 Senior Program. This is created to match older pets with age-appropriate owners for a waived or reduced fee. Older dogs are the highest category for euthanasia and this program provides a better life for both dogs and people. The majority of our older animals have spent their entire lives as loyal and loving companions. Once the owners have died or transferred to nursing homes, these dogs are thrown into shelters.

As with all Champaign County Animal Welfare League (CCAWL) pets, Sammie was completely vetted before being put up for adoption. She has been spayed, up to date on all vaccinations including rabies, worming, heart-worm testing and treated with flea and heart-worm prevention. CCAWL adopted dogs are all micro-chipped and have their 2016 dog license and dental cleaning.

If you are interested in visiting Sammie or any other of the adoptable pets at CCAWL, please call us at 937-834-5236. We are located at 3858 state Route 56, Mechanicsburg, OH, 43044. Dog and Cat adoption applications can be found online at www.champaigncoanimalwelfareleague.com. You may fax an adoption application to 937-834-5171. A complete listing of our available pets may be found at www.petfinder.com and www.adoptapet.com. The David Robert Wetzell Memorial Clinic is continuing to offer low-cost spaying and neutering to the public. This Clinic is for Low Cost Sterilizations and we also offer free TNR (trap, neuter, and return) to the citizens of Champaign County. Please call 937-834-5236 for further information and details.

A hot weather tip – when walking your dog on the streets, avoid blacktop, manholes and any metal surface. These surfaces can easily scorch your dog’s foot pads. In general, it’s best to keep street walks to a minimum as the temperature at ground level can be substantially higher than the air temperature. It is best to exercise your dog early in the morning and late in the evening.
