Urbana University sent its two seniors out in style with an 84-69 victory over Notre Dame College Saturday at the Grimes Center in women’s basketball.

With the victory, UU (12-14, 11-11) earned the sixth seed in this week’s Mountain East Conference Tournament and will host 11th-seeded West Virginia Wesleyan on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

It was an overall dominant team performance on Saturday by the Blue Knights, who snapped a three-game losing streak to the Falcons.

Five Blue Knights scored in double figures led by forward Jazmyn Haley’s game-high 22 points. Haley also registered her team-best sixth double-double with 11 rebounds.

Senior Kennedy Boggs collected 16 points, seven boards, and eight assists, while Danie Shafer filled the stat sheet with 11 points, nine boards and six assists.

Megan Beachy and Stefanie Davis each added 12 points, as Beachy went 4 of 9 from beyond the arc.

As a team, the Blue Knights shot 49 percent and drained eight threes. The UU defense stepped up in a crucial game by limiting the Falcons to 35 percent shooting and 18 percent from three-point range.

UU put together a 10-0 run to break a 15-15 tie in the first quarter. Shafer’s trey with 3:23 left in the opening frame sparked the run, which allowed the Blue Knights to gain a 25-20 lead entering the second frame.

The visitors were able to even the score at 38-38 with three minutes left in the second, but UU responded by outscoring NDC 10-2 down the stretch for a 48-40 advantage at halftime.

UU never trailed during the final two quarters.

Erin Morrow’s putback layup early in the third gave UU a 12-point lead, and then Beachy knocked down a three at the buzzer to put UU ahead 68-54.

The Blue Knights cruised in the fourth, and Boggs sealed it on a fastbreak layup to make it 82-60 with four minutes left.

UU men fall

The Urbana U. men’s basketball team dropped its final regular season game Saturday against in-state MEC rival Notre Dame College, 109-91.

UU (2-25, 1-21) will hit the road for its first-round MEC Tournament game on Tuesday as the 12th seed. The Blue Knights will play at fifth-seeded Charleston.

Shooting guard Carlas Jackson led the Blue Knights in scoring with 26 points and career-high eight rebounds. Dimitri Abner added 16 points, while Jahmere Howze (14), Justin Johnson (11) and Colin Curran (11) also contributed double digits.

NDC had four players go over 20 points, led by Tyree Gaiter’s triple-double performance of 32 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.
