A vehicle crash that appears to have caused the death of a county resident Monday is under investigation.

According to the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, Paula A. Schofield, 39, was found dead at the scene of the single-vehicle crash at 7025 Zerkle Road in Mad River Township. She was a Champaign County resident with a rural Springfield address.

The Champaign County-Wide Communication Center received a 911 call at 6:02 p.m. in reference to a single-vehicle crash involving airbag deployment. German Township Fire and EMS along with Champaign County deputies responded.

A preliminary investigation revealed a black 2014 Chevrolet Cruze driven by Schofield was traveling northbound on Zerkle Road. It appeared the vehicle had crossed into the southbound lane and off the west edge of the roadway.

The vehicle continued traveling along the grass area, striking a tree. Schofield was the only occupant in the vehicle. The vehicle sustained damage to its left front.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the crash remained under investigation by the Champaign County Coroner’s Office, the sheriff’s office and the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office – which is performing an autopsy.
