Glenville State sweeps past UU teams

GLENVILLE, W. Va. – Urbana University’s three-game win streak in league games came to an end Wednesday night, as the Blue Knights fell to the Pioneers of Glenville State by a final count of 109-92 inside the Waco Center.

UU sophomore Danie Shafer scored over 30 points for the third time this season, while coming up two 3-pointers shy of the school record. She went 7 of 13 from deep and made a career-high 11 field goals to lead all scorers with 31 points.

The UU men fell to Glenville State in the nightcap, 87-80.

A total of 10 Blue Knight women found the scoring column, including freshmen Megan Beachy (14 points) and Erin Morrow (11 points) who were the other UU members to score double digits. Senior Kennedy Boggs nearly put up a triple-double with nine points, seven rebounds and seven assists.

Statistically, the Blue Knights (4-6, 3-3 MEC) were solid after setting season-highs in rebounds (57), free-throw percentage (12-12), field goals (33) and 3-pointers (13).

However, Glenville State (9-3, 5-1 MEC) used its up-tempo style of play and mass substitutions to wear down the Blue and Grey.

The Pioneers had 15 players record playing time with six scoring in double figures. GSC also produced the most threes made against UU this season, sinking 19 shots on a whopping 53 attempts from beyond the arc.

Despite a season-high 22 turnovers and a high shooting volume by GSC, UU trailed by only two points at halftime, 42-40, after out-scoring the potent Pioneer offense 25-19 in the second quarter. Shafer and Boggs began the frame with five points each to give UU a 10-3 start to the quarter.

That was as close as UU could keep it though, as Glenville State came out of the break gunning and ended up with a 19-point lead in the third quarter following a 25-8 run.

By that point, UU couldn’t overcome fatigue to generate enough stops and GSC cruised the rest of the way.

UU’s only lead came on the first basket of the game by Shafer.

The Blue Knights out-rebounded the Pioneers 57-52. UU shot 39.8 percent from the floor overall and 39.4 percent from three-point range. GSC finished at 41.8 percent from the floor and 35.8 percent from beyond the arc.

UU returns to the Grimes Center for a Sunday matinee contest against UVa-Wise. Tipoff between the Blue Knights and Cavaliers is slated for 2 p.m.
