Providing gifts for local kids

On Oct. 10, the Mechanicsburg Eagles and corporate sponsor CRSI hosted a Bluegrass Festival benefiting the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, FOP Lodge 46, for their annual Children’s Christmas Fund. The event was called the “Blue Christmas Festival” and was a success. The proceeds will assist FOP Lodge 46 in providing Christmas to less fortunate children in Champaign County.

Deputies represented by FOP Lodge 46 started the Christmas program last year, helping families in Champaign County. The program “Operation Stomp Out a Blue Christmas” has grown from this past year. Deputies will obtain a list of families, then purchase gifts. Deputies, members of the Eagles and employees at CRSI will help wrap presents. On a special date in December deputies will deliver the presents to families along with a special guest, Santa Claus, who will ride along in a patrol vehicle leaving his sleigh parked for the evening.

Sheriff Matthew Melvin said that deputies encounter local people struggling financially every day, struggling to put food on the table every day, let alone buying Christmas presents for their children. He said this project allows deputies to make a difference.

“The Mechanicsburg Eagles and corporate sponsor CRSI graciously stepping forward enables us to expand our efforts in helping our less fortunate families within the Champaign County area,” Melvin said.

Donation Barrels can be found at the Mechanicsburg Eagles, located at 2306 Eagle Road, Woodstock; CRSI, located at 1150 Scioto St., Urbana; and the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, located at 308 Miami St., Urbana. Anyone interested in helping can purchase a new toy and deliver it unwrapped to one of those drop-off points.
