UHS tops Graham in sectional

Urbana defeated visiting Graham, 6-0, in boys sectional soccer on Tuesday, dispatching the rival Falcons from the postseason.

UHS’s Cooper Johnson led the way with a hat trick, scoring 3 goals. Makay Lemieux tallied 2 goals and Mklaine Eggleston had a score.

The final could have perhaps been even worse, as Urbana had several good opportunities go astray in the first half en route to a 2-0 lead at the intermission.

“That was one of the things I addressed at halftime that was frustrating to me,” Urbana Coach Dylan Walker said. “We didn’t move the ball to our ability. We’ve been most successful when we move the ball, pass the ball to feet, look for open channels – and we just weren’t doing that in the first half.”

The Hillclimbers got on the board with a volley from Johnson in the 20th minute. The shot was taken so close to the keeper’s face that he had no chance to stop it. Several minutes later, Eggleston put away his goal off of a corner kick.

The second half saw a much more relaxed Urbana team, but Graham did a good job keeping the Hillclimbers at bay until near the end of full time.

Johnson scored again on a volley in the 64th minute to push the lead to 3-0 before a flurry of goals ended the contest.

Lemieux scored in the 73rd minute, followed by Johnson rounding out his hat trick a minute later and Lemieux tallying his second just another minute after that.

“We woke up the last eight minutes of the game and started putting some goals away,” Walker said. “Still a little sloppy. Moving forward, we’re going to have to clean up some of that stuff.”

Graham finishes the year 3-14-0 overall while Urbana moves to 10-4-3.

“They were a young team and they’ve come a long way,” Graham Coach Ryan Stradling said of his squad. “They showed a lot of heart for a long time tonight and it didn’t go our way.”

The Hillclimbers play again on Saturday at 7 p.m.
