A woman who pleaded guilty to attacking and kidnapping a relative’s girlfriend will serve almost a decade in prison.

Edith A. Corfman, 51, was sentenced to nine years and six months in prison Monday during a sentencing hearing in the Champaign County Common Pleas Court. In addition to the prison sentence, Corfman was fined $500 and classified as a Tier I child victim offender.

Corfman pleaded guilty to felonious assault and abduction last month in connection to a May 14 incident.

Urbana police responded to a Concord Street residence on that date after a woman reported she was attacked inside her home, tied up and forcibly taken away with her infant daughter and a 4-year-old stepson in a vehicle by Corfman and her daughter, Lindsey A. Corfman.

Edith Corfman is the mother of the victim’s boyfriend and grandmother of both children.

The Corfmans unexpectedly arrived at the victim’s residence on that date and reportedly attacked her. During the attack, Edith Corfman told her daughter to bring her a sauce pan from the kitchen which she used to strike the victim in the head.

Court documents state police recovered the pan, which had a dent and dried blood on it. Edith Corfman also tried to force the victim to take a sleeping tablet and tried to choke the victim.

The co-defendants tied up the victim and forced her and the two children into a vehicle that stopped near the city pond at Melvin Miller Park. Edith Corfman reportedly threatened to throw the infant into the pond unless the victim agreed to help convince her son to give up custody of the child to her.

While police observed several cuts, scrapes and contusions on the victim’s head and face, both children were found uninjured.

One of the significant factors the court took into consideration when sentencing Edith Corfman was a 2011 conviction in the Champaign County Municipal Court for persistent disorderly conduct.

A court statement filed in the case states Edith Corfman took an infant without permission from the parent in March 2011. After law enforcement arrived to ensure the child was returned, they struggled with her to get the child.

The child victim in that case was also a victim in the current case.

Upon her release, Edith Corfman is subject to post release control for three years.

Lindsey Corfman, 20, was indicted on three counts of abduction and one count each of aggravated burglary, felonious assault and kidnapping for her alleged involvement in the case.

A not guilty by reason of insanity plea was accepted on her behalf in August and she was scheduled to undergo an evaluation to determine her competency to stand trial at the Forensic Psychiatry Center for Western Ohio on Aug. 14.

A journal entry filed in the common pleas court on Sept. 9 states the forensic examiner requested a two-week extension for submitting his evaluation to the court on Sept. 1. This extension was granted on Sept. 2 and the entry states the court will await receiving the forensic evaluation before taking further action in Lindsey Corfman’s case.
