New bakery opening in old site

Area residents dismayed at the closing of Bobby D’s Cakes & More can cheer up. A new bakery at the same location will open July 21.

Celestial Cakes and Creations will take over the location at 1501 S. U.S. Route 68 in Urbana, featuring a variety of baked goods and will take custom orders for any event, said new owners Celeste and Anthony Artis.

Having her own cake shop has been a dream for years, after a botched cake purchase got her into decorating her own creations, Mrs. Artis said.

“I always baked, but I never really decorated much,” she said. She made a Toy Story-themed cake for her son that turned out well, and she perfected her decorating skill.

She met Bobby D’s owners Robert Mason and Roger Puckett when she dropped in and showed them a picture of some of the work she could do. She told them she’d be interested if they were ever looking for a decorator. At the time, they were not, but they kept in touch.

A couple years ago, Mason and Puckett decided they wanted to retire and mentioned the availability of the business. At that time, Mrs. Artis said she was too busy to take it over, so the shop went on the market. Her friends, family and her employer all encouraged her to go for her dream, so she and her husband bought the business. The transition was finalized about four months ago, the Artises said.

“They have been tremendously incredible to us,” she said.

“They were amazing for the whole transition,” her husband added.

The Artises redid the interior of the shop, adding new paint and new counters and cases for display.

Mrs. Artis said she would likely not have done it without the encouragement of family and friends. Her former employer, Dr. Boris Terebuh, encouraged her to go for it.

She said she works with fondant and gum paste, decorations and icing that residents would more likely see in shops in larger cities.

The shop will feature gourmet cupcakes, cakes and other baked goods. The shop will not produce donuts, she said, because they do not want to be in direct competition with other area businesses. They will take custom orders for baked goods and hope to feature breads and other treats from all over the world on a monthly basis.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday to Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Mrs. Artis said they hope to expand those hours into earlier in the morning after getting settled.

The couple hope to eventually add on to the business with barbecue, but they do not have a time line on when that expansion may occur. Mr. Artis said he already has a barbecue on a trailer waiting to be used.
