Ohio convict sentenced to life without parole in Kentucky

PADUCAH, Ky. (AP) — An Ohio man who is serving time for murdering a man there 11 years ago has admitted to another slaying a few days later in Kentucky on the grounds of Fort Knox.

The U.S. attorney’s office said 49-year-old Ernest Otto Smith admitted murdering Cathy M. Barnett in January 2005. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Smith is serving 32 years for killing James Dilligham in Toledo, Ohio. Prosecutors said in a news release Friday that after Dillingham was killed, Smith and Barnett fled to Kentucky.

In a wooded area on the military post’s grounds, prosecutors say Smith tried to break Barnett’s neck, then beat her with a tree branch. He was arrested two weeks later in Nashville, Tennessee.

The release said Smith told a former parole officer where Barnett’s remains would be found.
