Mom claims innocence 3 years after plea in toddler’s death

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio woman who pleaded guilty in the killing of her toddler more than three years ago now says she’s innocent and was denied access to evidence proving it.

Angela Steinfurth appeared in a Toledo courtroom this past week after a judge allowed her to be transferred from a state prison in Dayton for the hearing.

Lucas County Judge Gary Cook says he wants to see if she has any recourse and make sure her constitutional rights are protected

Steinfurth is serving 18 years to life after entering a type of guilty plea to murder under which she maintains her innocence but acknowledges prosecutors had evidence to convict her.

Prosecutors say she and her ex-boyfriend played a role in killing 18-month-old Elaina Steinfurth, whose remains were found in a garage.
