Swastika, anti-Arab graffiti target Lebanese family in Ohio

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Someone spray-painted a swastika and a profane message cursing Arabs on a Lebanese family’s garage in what Ohio police are investigating as an act of ethnic intimidation.

Souheir Eltatawy, of Sylvania Township, tells The Blade in Toledo she hadn’t previously experienced such intimidation since arriving from Lebanon in 1988. Her daughter found the graffiti Tuesday night.

A son who lives in Toledo, Moustafa Eltatawy, tells The Blade the graffiti initially made him angry and fearful for his family. But he says now he feels sorry for whoever is responsible because they clearly harbor hate.

WTOL-TV reports leaders of the United Muslim Association of Toledo and the Cleveland chapter of the Council on Arab-Islamic Relations condemned the vandalism as an act of hatred and urged community leaders to do the same.
