AKRON, Ohio (AP) — A northeast Ohio woman is heading to prison for holding her 2-year-old daughter in a bathtub filled with scalding water last year.
Twenty-seven-year-old Monique Smith was sentenced Tuesday to five years behind bars. She pleaded guilty earlier this year to felonious assault and child endangering.
Authorities say the Akron woman placed and restrained the girl in a bathtub filled with hot water and delayed taking her daughter to a hospital for hours. The child suffered second- and third-degree burns to her buttocks and feet in July 2015.
Prosecutors say the girl’s burns were consistent with someone being held in 124-degree water for at least two minutes. The Akron Beacon Journal reports the girl remained hospitalized for about a week.
Smith denied holding the girl in the water.
