Suspect in New Mexico officer’s death denied bond

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — The Ohio fugitive accused of fatally shooting a New Mexico police officer has been denied bond.

Jesse Hanes of Columbus made his first appearance in federal court on Friday.

He appeared via video in magistrate court in Las Cruces.

Hanes was arraigned on federal carjacking and firearms crimes.

The 38-year-old Hanes is accused of gunning down Hatch Police Officer Jose Chavez during a traffic stop last week.

He also faces a first-degree murder charge in state court.

Chavez was shot on Aug. 12 in Hatch and died at a Texas hospital.

Hanes had been hospitalized for a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was dressed in red scrubs and was in a wheelchair in court Friday.
