CINCINNATI (AP) — The mother of a 4-year-old girl who died days after being found unresponsive in their home’s bathroom has been indicted on aggravated murder and other charges in Cincinnati.
Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters (DEE’-turs) says 24-year-old Britney Mayes could be sentenced to life in prison without parole if convicted of all charges. The Cincinnati woman also is charged with two murder counts and one child endangering count.
Mayes is jailed on $2 million bond. Defense attorney Bradley Fox said Wednesday the indictment didn’t come as a big surprise, and that the defense of the case will begin.
Mayes’ daughter, Avery, was found unresponsive in a bathtub July 29 and was taken to a hospital. She died Aug. 1.
Prosecutors say Mayes was convicted in 2012 of a child endangering charge.
