Police: Officers shoot, kill man armed with gun in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — An armed man was fatally shot by police responding to a report of a man with a gun at an apartment complex, a police spokeswoman said.

Multiple shots were fired Thursday night during a confrontation on a lawn between two officers and an armed man matching the suspect’s description, Columbus police said.

Police spokeswoman Denise Alex-Bouzounis said she couldn’t immediately say whether the armed man fired his weapon. Police said they recovered a gun at the scene, in a neighborhood southeast of downtown.

“Anything that the suspect did, any movements he made, any movements the officers involved made are all going to be under investigation,” she said.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police identified him Friday as Kawme Dejuan Patrick.

The officers, both eight-year veterans of the police division, were unhurt.

Investigators are looking for any witnesses who might have information about what happened, Alex-Bouzounis said. She said the investigation could take weeks or months to complete.

She praised the concerned caller who had notified police, saying that person did the right thing by seeking help after spotting something suspicious.
