Jury reaches verdict on sentence for Ohioan in 3 killings

CLEVELAND (AP) — Court officials say a Cleveland jury has reached a verdict on whether to recommend the death sentence for a man convicted of killing three women and wrapping their bodies in garbage bags.

The verdict will be announced later Friday.

The jury began deliberations Thursday in 38-year-old Michael Madison’s case. He was convicted of aggravated murder earlier this month in the deaths of three women whose bodies were found in an apartment in 2013.

Prosecutors said in closing arguments Thursday that Madison deserves to be executed because of the circumstances surrounding the killings.

Defense attorneys argued Madison’s life should be spared because of lasting psychological damage caused by an abusive childhood.

If the jury recommends the death penalty, a judge will decide if Madison should die by lethal injection or get life in prison.
