DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Authorities say a 3-year-old boy pulled from a river in southwest Ohio has died.
Fire officials in Dayton tell WHIO-TV the young boy had been playing on some rocks next to the Mad River Wednesday night when he fell in and was swept into an eddy.
Officials say his father jumped in to try to save him but was unsuccessful.
Officials say the boy had been underwater for more than a half-hour before rescuers who were training nearby could reach him. They performed CPR and other measures on the boy.
Montgomery County authorities say he died at an area hospital.
The boy hasn’t been identified. A preliminary cause of death hasn’t been released.
An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.
