Republicans push to get Amish, Mennonites to the polls

LANCASTER, Pa. (AP) — Republicans with ties to Newt Gingrich and Ben Carson have launched an effort to drive Amish and Mennonite voters in Pennsylvania and Ohio to the polls this fall.

LNP newspapers ( reports that the campaign aims to build on a similar effort in 2004 on behalf of George W. Bush, but leaders say they aren’t affiliated with a candidate.

The group is raising money through an organization called Amish PAC. Co-founder Ben Walters says Amish and Mennonite residents are among the most conservative potential voters but Republicans have done a poor job of reaching them.

Analysts say it’s unclear whether Amish voters will support Donald Trump. They say his business acumen is a plus but his style could be an issue.
