Republicans push to get Amish, Mennonites to the polls

LANCASTER, Pa. (AP) — Republicans with ties to Newt Gingrich and Ben Carson have launched an effort to drive Amish and Mennonite voters in Pennsylvania and Ohio to the polls this fall.

LNP newspapers (http://bit.ly/1YwafJ7) reports that the campaign aims to build on a similar effort in 2004 on behalf of George W. Bush, but leaders say they aren’t affiliated with a candidate.

The group is raising money through an organization called Amish PAC. Co-founder Ben Walters says Amish and Mennonite residents are among the most conservative potential voters but Republicans have done a poor job of reaching them.

Analysts say it’s unclear whether Amish voters will support Donald Trump. They say his business acumen is a plus but his style could be an issue.
