LAS VEGAS (AP) — A son of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy is due for arraignment in U.S. District Court, and could ask a magistrate judge to let him out of jail to await trial on charges stemming from an armed confrontation with government agents in 2014.
Mel Bundy is expected to plead not guilty Monday to counts including conspiracy, obstruction, weapon offenses and assault on federal officers.
If he wins release, he’d be the first of 19 people indicted in the case to be freed since their arrests in recent weeks, including his father.
Two of his brothers, Ammon and Ryan Bundy, are in custody in Oregon.
Their brother David Bundy is being held in Utah.
Prosecutors argue all 19 are a danger to the public, and would resist returning to court.
